universal fittings is a print project by rey akdogan that features a selection of propositions for the lobby space at 465 grand street/common room 2.
yes, yes i was quite taken by the features of the back lobby when i saw it first. the floor pattern, thick dusky pink textured wallpaper, the emergency phone, the wood paneling with the huge sign, the stark stainless steel elevator and the light in the space could be almost compared to a sound, a kind of hum. each wall feels like a still, each taken from a different movie, and pasted together.
it sounds like a very charged space.
yes, it is almost hard to experience it as a whole. it is almost impossible to add anything to it. it is as if you were just passing through, or waiting for the elevator, and you glanced at the floor pattern and imagined an enormous abstract painting holding the entire building together.
