Greenpoint Diner

Greenpoint Diner

Brooklyn, NY
2006

The diner is sited on a triangular traffic island formerly occupied by a gas station. At 800 square feet the usable area of the tax lot is equal to the area of the side walk that bounds the island. The design incorporates the sidewalk area as part of the footprint by using large operable wood panels that open out onto the side walk, creating semi-private eating areas and doubling the size of the diner. When closed the building reveals itself as a direct extrusion of the triangular site. Instead of signage, there is a green roof providing the diner with an identity and a place to smoke.
