Openness, flexibility and horizontal structures do have their problems, though. In New York, the Public School’s most internally debated course was the seemingly prosaic “Stupid Rhino Tricks,” a course on how to use Rhino 3D architectural software. The selection committee wanted to be sure it wouldn’t be the same kind of course available at a local college, according to Todd Rouhe of the architectural group Common Room, which organized the New York school. In the end, two teachers collaborated on an elaborate presentation that taught the software by demonstrating how not to use it. One person showed up.
