architecture structures

this text was originally written for avery shorts, season 1 and is reproduced here with kind permission.

architecture structures life

is a structural, organizational way of spending time, in life

structuring time allows for structuring the environment

structuring the environment structures time

time spent

places to spend time

the time it takes

to put the structure in place

to structure the temporal structure

the environment is a concrete structuring of time

this is what a day looks like (draw a divided cube)

this is what a week looks like (draw an odd number of divided cubes)

and a month (draw a stack of divided cubes)

holidays don’t count (same stack of cubes)

this is what a season looks like (draw several stacks of divided cubes)

and a year (draw a pile of cubes)

disassembling the structure, reconfiguring the structure

breaking away from the structure

what if architecture were against time, not of the time, untimely?

hesitating

able to act and react to itself

before, while, and after making

this is what a day would look like (wonder what a divided cube represents)

this is what that same day would look like (decide whether or not to draw a divided cube)

this is what week(s) would look like (wonder, decide, draw, refuse, wonder again)

and month(s) (repeat, destroy, wait)

holidays interrupt, suspend, accentuate

seasons come and go

and a year (is yet to be defined or can’t be defined)

there is no structure, there is potential

architecture would be open again
